Spectacled Bear / Feltis
Spectacled Bear Conservation Society’s (SBC) mission is to conserve and protect spectacled bears and their habitat in northern Peru through scientific research, education and collaboration with local communities and landowners.
We conduct field research to identify areas with prime spectacled bear habitat. We then partner with communities who own the land and choose to protect it by creating a private protected area. Through this partnership we start a new chapter of our Felti program in the community, which employs local women.
Our Felti program, started in 2010, is a vital component of our conservation work and results in a direct economic benefit for the communities we partner with on creating protected areas. The opportunity to participate in our Felti program is an incentive for communities to protect spectacled bear habitat and builds trust and strong relationships between SBC and local people.
About Feltis
Feltis are dry-needle felted ornaments handcrafted by women from rural and indigenous communities in northern Peru.
Our Feltis are made of 100% sheep’s wool. We source most wool locally from farms high in the Andes mountains of northern Peru where women typically tend the fields and sheep, shearing their herd once or twice a year using a pair of scissors or a sharp knife. At our Conservation Centre we wash and dye the wool, then prepare it for use by running it through a carding machine to brush the fibers into the same direction.
